Equipment deployed

Client requirements

  • To achieve a PUE below 1.2 without introducing outdoor air into the IT equipment
  • Maximise energy savings utilising advanced cooling technology to exploit free cooling opportunities
  • Compressor-free
  • Comply with Uptime Institute’s Tier III classification
  • N+1 resilience
  • Total facility capacity of 15.4MW with IT power provision split over 4 buildings with 2 data hall modules per building. Each of the 8 data hall modules to be rated at 1.92MW with the ability to sub divide each hall into 2 x 960kW modules

Project overview

DUB13

Located in the data center hub of Dublin, the site has a total building size of 8,000 m² with a UPS and cooling redundancy of N+1. By achieving a PUE of 1.15 for a 1920kW site, there is an approximate saving of €650,000 in energy bills  in comparison to a site with a PUE of 1.6.

The successful integrated system testing delivered a peak site PUE of 1.2 on one of the hottest days on record in Dublin. The site was calculated to achieve a WUE of 0.7 and CUE of 0.0625.

The compressor-free cooling system has a significantly lower electrical demand, reducing required infrastructure while redistributing power savings to the IT compute. Digital Realty were able to increase their available IT power from 1440kW to 1920kW, while decreasing the generator size by 41% and transformers by 23%. Associated savings on diesel storage and switchgear were also realised.

The site was awarded the Uptime Institute’s BRILL award for Product Solutions as well as the Tier III classification for both design and facility. This was the first time the Tier III classification was awarded to a data center in Ireland.

The site was also recognised by BREEAM as one of the most efficient and sustainably designed and constructed data centers in Europe, achieving an ‘Excellent’ status.
